Television has been on the market for over 79 years since its invention in 1928. Before 2000, no one has ever doubted the position of CRT TV with its domination of output volume and output figures. That was not until 2001 with the launch of the first 20” LCD TV from Sharp when the CRT TV’s position began to waver. However, old LCDs continue to be in production and a new generations of LCDs are constantly emerging. In just a few years consumer choice for LCD TVs have broadened from 20” to 26”, 32” and 37”. And now production focus for 2007 has even soared to more than 40 inches. In 2006 growth margin of global LCD TV output reached a high of 108% since it benefited from the rising importance of large scaled LCDs. Meanwhile the ASP (Average Sale Price) of LCD TV held firm. According to calculations made by Topology Research Institute, the output value for LCD TVs in 2006 has reached 51.6 billion US dollars, the first time it has surpassed CRT TV, which is 23 billion US dollars, and it has occupied the world’s TV output value by 50.7%.

LCD TV’s output statistics for 2006 reveal that global LCD TV output volume having reached 43.657 million units. It is estimated that in 2007, the growth rate for global LCD TVs will be reaching 50% with 65.313 million units expected to be sold. In view of competitive costs, major international manufacturers are simultaneously outsourcing production of their LCD TVs. Taiwanese manufacturers are at the center of the LCD TV business with decades of accumulated assembling experience in LCD displays and NBs. Taiwan’s LCD TV output volume in 2004 is 1.771 million units, 4.921 million units in 2005 and 9.204 million units in 2006. The statistics reveal that Taiwan’s LCD TVs are occupying the world’s total output volume by growing on an average by more 20% every year. All this means that within three years from their start in 2004 that one out of every five LCD TVs produced in the world will have been made by a Taiwanese manufacturer.

The huge volume of competition in the field of assembling and branding should be noted. Up to the end of 2006 there were more than 15 Taiwanese manufacturers in the field. In included professional contracting manufacturers like YHi, MiTAC, Wistron, Quanta and Compal, and others using parallel branding and EMS (Electronics Manufacturing Service) like TPV, AmTRAN, BenQ, Nexgen, Tatung, Kolin, Delta, TECO and Sampo. Meanwhile Acer is concentrating their efforts on the sales and marketing of its self owned brand items.
